With Its goal to reduce oil dependency while solving the challenge of energy scarcity, moving towards renewable and clean sources of energy are at the top of the national agenda. The aim is to reach 30% EV penetration by 2030, which will generate an estimated saving of up to 474 Millions of tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) and 846 million tonnes of net CO2 emissions over their lifetime.
To make this green mobility reach the grass route level, efficiently manpowered Public charging infrastructure will be key. So the training of frontline staff is of utmost importance.
As per the news report, Kolkata-based Central Staff Training and Research Institute is in the process of preparing the programme curriculum for electric vehicle technicians, while, the Power Sector Skill Council is framing four occupational standards for supervisors, technician and helpers who will be trained exclusively for maintaining e-vehicles. Ease of Doing Business division of ASSAR has moved this NOTE to NITI Aayog to pull these distinct initiatives together in NHEV Capacity building program with DISCOM’s staffs, Drivers, Operators, technicians, RSA personels and drivers needed together on a E-highway project.

This workforce will be trained to deal with a Charging point application coming from 50 KM rural, semi urban geo fencing radius of these stations as efficiently as BSNL and other telecom companies handle the user request for landline or broadband connection. Concessional tariff for electricity for EV charging is notified in 14 states in India; and other states are expected to notify the same in the near future. In order to avail the concessional tariff, a dedicated connection with a separate meter is required for the EV charging station. When an application for a new electricity connection for an EV charging station is received by a DISCOM, they should conduct a technical feasibility of allocating that from the existing grid system. If the existing distribution transformer and wires cannot accommodate the additional load, they need to upgrade the distribution transformer capacity or construct a new 11kV line and setup a new distribution transformer for the connection for the EV charging station. This depends on the existing grid situation and the additional load required for the EV charging station. Giving electricity connections to EV charging stations is a new business for the DISCOMs and the field staff of DISCOMs may be trained on the nuances and safety precautions to be taken in this regard.
Public charging infrastructure will be key to electric vehicle success in India, at present, the EV charging infrastructure market is driven by public sector companies that buy chargers in bulk. EV charger market in India is dominated by fully or partially foreign made chargers, and SLS is among those suppliers who has 100% made in India chargers with similar specifications and standards on comparatively low price.
