Dr. (Shri) Vijay Kumar Saraswat is a renowned scientist, technologist, and policy leader with over four decades of experience in defence research, strategic technologies, and national development. He currently serves as a Member of NITI Aayog and is the former Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), contributing significantly to India’s innovation, technology, manufacturing, energy, and industrial growth agenda.
A former Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), he has played a pivotal role in the development of several indigenous missile systems, including Prithvi, Agni-5, Dhanush, and Prahaar, as well as India’s Ballistic Missile Defence Programme, Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, and other strategic defence technologies. His contributions have significantly advanced India’s self-reliance in critical defence capabilities.
Beyond defence, he has contributed to national initiatives in energy transition, semiconductor technologies, supercomputing, advanced manufacturing, and innovation-driven industrial development. Through his roles in NITI Aayog and national research bodies, he continues to support emerging technologies, sustainable energy systems, and technology-led economic growth.
As Chair of the NHEV Knowledge Group, Dr. (Shri) Saraswat provides strategic guidance on future mobility, sustainable transportation, and innovation-led infrastructure development, supporting the evolution of energy-efficient and technology-driven mobility ecosystems in India.
He is a recipient of the Padma Shri (1998) and Padma Bhushan (2013) and has also been conferred honorary doctorates by multiple universities across India in recognition of his contributions to science and public service.
